Azalea Estates
For a school assignment, I had to do a geriatric interview and was assigned to go to a local Assisted Living facility called Azalea Estates. I did my interview with a very nice gentleman named Mr. James Barnes. As it turns out, Mr. Barnes is pretty much the last living member of his family and doesn't have anyone around to come visit or check in on him. I checked with the director on my way out about returning to volunteer and to visit Mr. Barnes again in the future, and she thought it was a wonderful idea. I went back for a Valentine's Day lunch they had, and brought Kaira with me. I didn't get any pictures of it, but she was a huge helper and walked around passing out valentines and treats to all of the residents (there are about 60). We also ate lunch with Mr. Barnes. After lunch, Kaira asked to go to the bathroom and the director offered to take her so I could stay and talk with Mr. Barnes. After a few minutes, the director returned... without Kaira. It turns out Kaira had joined some residents at a table to play dominoes. She caught on fast and really enjoyed playing. In fact, we ended up staying for a few hours and Kaira was sad to finally go because Bingo was about to start. I had to promise her that we could go back soon to visit again. So I think it was good for all involved. Here are a couple pictures of Kaira playing dominoes.

Kid's Council
Kaira and I joined a local group called the Kid's Council, which is a group that helps let kids to volunteer and philanthropic work. The first event that we attended was to make/decorate Valentine's for the children in one of the local Children's hospitals.

SciPort
We made another trip to SciPort, and brought one of Kaira's favorite classmates, Henry, with us.

Looking at baby alligators... making a river... Henry in the astronaut suit... playing with centrifugal force...

In the paddle boat exhibit... and Kaira & Henry each on one side of the boat pulling and pushing to make the paddle wheel turn...

Part of the "Robots" exhibit currently set up - full of interactive robots you can manipulate with handles, levers, etc.
A giant robot fly... a dinosaur head... a platypus robot... a chameleon robot (it even changes colors!)

Using 'sticky feet' paddles to simulate walking up a wall like a fly...

Camouflage!

Making paper airplanes, and then shooting them through the paper airplane launcher
(you can modify your lift angle, etc and try to see if you can make it through one or all of the three hoops they have hanging down)

Space shuttle command center... there are simulators to fly/land space shuttles, screens to show star patterns, trivia games about space travel and all sorts of other fun things...

A center called Kid Works... where kids can learn to do all sorts of things - try to connect the plumbing in a play house, play with a circuit board to figure out how to complete circuits to turn on lights, play grass and sidewalk pieces to adjust the 'landscaping' outside of the play house... insulation to play with to see how it affected sound or temperature... a pulley system to move supplies between the ground and second floor... this place was LOADS of fun!

Basketball Hoop
Kaira has been enjoying playing basketball so much, I decided to put up a basketball hoop in the backyard for her to practice on. There was a concrete slab already out there in the back of the yard, so we just added the hoop and were set to go. She has been having a lot of fun shooting around by herself or playing one-on-one with me.

She shoots... she scores!

Check out that jump shot!

A Kid's Meal that comes in a car! She loved it!

Girl Scout Field Trip - to the Police Station
Kaira's Daisy troop went on a field trip to the Police Station.

They got to check out the fingerprint database on the computer, and each got to do a fingerprint themselves; They also got to sit in the room where the officers do roll call and receive their assignments every morning

Then we got to go down to the garage and check out the different patrol cars and bikes. The girls even got to take turns sitting on one of the motorcycles.

They also got to climb inside one of the patrol cars...

The troop with a couple of the officers at the end of the station tour.

Kaira in her smock with all of the current patches and petals on it. They receive a petal for each activity they do or a trait they learn. The center of the flower is from learning to recite the Girl Scout promise. Some of the petals they have earned - the orange petal is for showing responsibility (by taking care of the garden they planted together), the light green petal is for being considerate and caring (which they showed by caroling at a nursing home), and the dark green petal is for understanding how to use resources wisely (learned from visiting a local recycling center). They will also be earning a petal from their police station visit, so only two more to go! There is also a patch at the bottom from visiting the fire station, and her honorary police officer sticker on the other side.

Artwork
Some Valentine's day and President's day art from school. For the president one, they had to draw themselves, add the beard and hat, and then complete the sentence, "If I were president..."

Basketball Team Photos

Playing at the park
One of our many days hanging out at the park. And the last one, Kaira posed and wanted me to take a picture of her (look how skinny she's getting!! I swear she eats... a lot!)

Self Portrait
A picture Kaira drew of herself... (I added a similar picture of her for comparison - hers is a good likeness!)

Karen's Stuff

Starting this semester and continuing til the end of the second year, we will be learning about the body system by system. We started with Musculoskeletal, which we just finished (the pictures below are from the party celebrating the end of Musculo). We are now in the beginning of Neuroscience, which is one of the longest and will take us clear through til the end of May.

Our most recent post-test class party was 80's themed. I went all out with the big 80's hair, purple tights, teal leg warmers, big earrings, and of course... the bright blue eye shadow.

And some of my classmates that looked, like, totally awesome. And someone even did Flashdance!
