May 2009

First year of medical school is finally over - and Kaira graduated from Kindergarten! It's been a big year for both of us. It has been a long, hard year for me... but it's over and it went well. I managed to stay consistently in the top half of my class. Kaira loved kindergarten - she finished the year with perfect attendance, and was sad to say goodbye to her beloved teacher, but is looking forward to starting 1st grade this fall.

Field Day!
Kaira at her school's Field Day. I didn't get pictures of the tug-of-war at the very end of the day, but Kaira and her class were the Kindergarten champions, beating both other classes.

Races and the Long Jump...

Who can kick their shoe the farthest?

Bouncy ball races - this one was Kaira's favorite, if you couldn't tell from the pictures :)

Team relays races, passing the ball over your head and through your legs...

More SciPort
Kaira being a paleontologist and digging for fossils...

Being an astronaut and a skipper...

And playing with the hard hats...

They have this cool thing with mirrors where you each sit on opposite sides of the reflective glass and, if you adjust the lights just right, you can superimpose once face on top of the other. The picture doesn't do it justice, as it didn't really line the faces up quite right (was shooting the picture from the side a bit), but was really cool to see my face and Kaira's lined up... very many similar features!

Mother's Day
I took the day off from studying for Mother's Day (a rare treat, especially since it was getting close to finals), and Kaira and I spent the day down at the Boardwalk, where there are all kinds of fun things to do.

Taking pictures by the fountain, and riding the carosel...

We stopped to get treats at the candy store and then sat outside and listened to the live band playing while we enjoyed them...

Then Kaira made a bear at the Build-A-Bear shop for my Mother's Day gift. She got to stuff it, brush it down in the bear 'washing' station, name it & make a birth certificate, and pick out an outfit for it - they had a set of scrubs that she ended up choosing for it (complete with scrub mask and hat)... so I now have a Doctor Bear named Sarah. Very cute.

We stopped for lunch, got ice cream, and then watched a movie... in 3D! Kaira loved the 3D movie. And of course we took a picture sporting our awesome 3D glasses (they aren't red & blue anymore like they were when I was little).

Author's Night
Each of the kids in Kaira's class got to write and illustrate their own book. Then they got to read them to their classmates and parents at Author's Night. Kaira's book was called The Animal Book, though it's mostly about cats. Here are pictures of her reading her book to her audience...

Kids Can Cook
Kaira has a kid's cook book (from Grammy - thank you!) that she has been wanting to make some things out of. So one night, I let her make both dinner and dessert. She made Pigs in a Blanket for dinner. And then for dessert, she made little apple pies by putting apple filling (made w/ a little help from mom) into flattened cresent rolls, and then pressing the edges shut. Both turned out very good. Here's the chef in action...

Kids' Council
Kaira is a member of the local Kids' Council, a group to help teach kids to be philanthropists. During their quarterly meeting, the kids in her age group decorated placemats to be laminated and sold at an upcoming fundraiser. They also each got to put their thumbprints (which would later be turned into little bee's) on the big bin, along with a phrase of their choice, such as "Bee strong" or "Bee a friend". The phrases were to be words of encouragement to the many kids in the Children's Hospital.
